Gemini in Chrome is the Gemini assistant built into Google Chrome. Because it reads the page you’re on, you can ask it to sum up an article, compare products across tabs, edit an image, or fill out a form for you. To open it, click the Gemini icon at the top right of Chrome. It works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook Plus, Android, and iPhone.
Applies to: Google Chrome on Windows, macOS, Chromebook Plus, Android, and iPhone/iPad. You need to sign in to Chrome with a Google account, be 18 or older, and live in a supported country. Auto browse also needs a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra plan.
Which Gemini features does Chrome have?
- Side panel chat about the page you’re on
- Summaries of articles and YouTube videos
- Multi-tab comparisons
- Select to ask for one paragraph or image
- Nano Banana image editing and infographics

What is Gemini in Chrome?
Gemini in Chrome is Google’s Gemini AI with access to the page you have open. That’s the main difference from gemini.google.com. In other words, you don’t copy and paste anything. Instead, you just ask, “What are the main points here?” and Gemini answers from the page.
On a computer, Gemini opens in a side panel on the right, next to your page. Android phones show it at the bottom of the screen instead. And on iPhone and iPad, you’ll find it under Page Tools.
Who can use Gemini in Chrome?
It first launched in the U.S. After that, it reached Canada, India, and New Zealand, along with more than 50 languages, such as Hindi, French, and Spanish.
- Computers: Windows, macOS, and Chromebook Plus.
- Android: Android 12 or later with at least 4GB of RAM. At first, the phone’s language also had to be English (US).
- iPhone and iPad: through Page Tools in Chrome.
- Accounts: personal Google accounts and Google Workspace accounts. However, on a work account, your admin can switch it off.
- Cost: free, except auto browse, which needs AI Pro or AI Ultra and is U.S.-only for now.
Google keeps adding countries. So if the Gemini icon is missing, update Chrome and then check your language settings.
How do I open Gemini in Chrome?
- First, open Google Chrome and sign in with your Google account.
- Next, go to the page you want help with.
- Click the Gemini icon at the top right of the toolbar.
- Finally, type your question in the Ask Gemini box and press Enter.
On Android, tap the Gemini icon at the top right. For iPhone or iPad, tap Page Tools, then Ask Gemini. Our Gemini in Chrome for iPhone and iPad guide has the details.
How do I summarize a page or YouTube video?
Open the article or video, then open Gemini and ask. Here are a few prompts that work well:
- “Summarize this page in five bullet points.”
- “What does this video say about battery life?”
- “Explain this to someone who’s never used Linux.”
- “Make a 10-question quiz from this page.”
You can also ask it to change what’s on the page. For example, it can swap a recipe’s ingredients for vegan ones, pull the complaints out of a long review, or find the one setting you need on a giant help page. Still, check anything important against the page itself, because Gemini does get things wrong.
Can Gemini compare my open tabs?
Yes. Gemini can read several tabs at once, so it helps a lot when you’re shopping or planning a trip.
- First, open the tabs you want to compare, such as three laptop pages.
- Then open the Gemini side panel.
- Click the + button in the prompt box and pick the tabs.
- Ask something like “Compare these laptops in a table by price, battery, and weight.”
It can also combine tabs. For instance, give it a flight, a hotel, and a restaurant, and then ask for a day-by-day trip plan.
How do I ask Gemini about one part of a page?
- Select text to ask Gemini: highlight some text, and an Ask Gemini menu appears. Here’s how to turn on Select text to ask Gemini.
- Pointer-based prompting (rolling out): point your cursor at an image, paragraph, or product and ask about just that. For example, “Is this the same model as the one in my other tab?”
What is Nano Banana in Chrome?
Nano Banana is Google’s Gemini image model. In Chrome, you can use it to make or edit images from the side panel, without even downloading the original. For example, you can:
- turn a long article into a one-page infographic,
- swap the sofa in a real estate listing photo, or
- redo a photo as a watercolor.
See how to edit photos with Nano Banana in Chrome’s sidebar for the steps.
What are Skills in Chrome?
Skills are Gemini prompts you save and run again later. Say you keep typing “How much protein is in this recipe?” on cooking sites. In that case, save it as a Skill and run it with one click instead.
How do I create and run a Skill?
- First, send Gemini a prompt in the side panel.
- Then, in your Gemini chat history, save that prompt as a Skill.
- Later, on any page, type / in the prompt box or click +.
- Pick the Skill. It runs on the current page plus any tabs you added.
Google also has a Skills library with ready-made Skills for shopping, recipes, budgeting, and work. Just add one and edit the prompt however you like. For now, though, Skills only work when Chrome’s language is English (US).
To see and manage your saved Skills, open Settings > AI innovations and click Skills in Chrome.

How does Gemini work with Gmail, Calendar, and other Google apps?
With Connected apps turned on, Gemini can use Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Shopping, and Google Flights. On Android, it also works with Google Keep.
For example, on a concert page, say “Add this to my calendar.” Planning a trip? Then ask “Find my hotel booking in Gmail.” Either way, Gemini checks with you before it sends an email or creates an event. You can turn each app on or off under Connected Apps in Gemini settings.
What is Personal Intelligence?
Personal Intelligence is a setting you choose to turn on. When it’s on, Gemini uses your past chats and connected apps, like Gmail and Google Photos, to give answers that fit you better. It stays off unless you switch it on, and you can also disconnect apps whenever you want.
What is auto browse in Chrome?
Auto browse lets Gemini use websites for you. In short, it clicks, scrolls, types, and fills in forms until the task is done. You give it the goal, and then it works through the pages while you watch or do something else.
People use it to:
- compare flight or hotel prices,
- fill out long forms,
- add items to a shopping cart,
- book an appointment or a parking spot, and
- check which store has something in stock.
Right now, auto browse is available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., on computers and on some Android phones.
Is auto browse safe?
Before it buys anything or posts to social media, Auto Browse stops and asks you. Plus, you can stop it at any point. It only signs in to sites with Google Password Manager if you allow it. Chrome also guards against prompt injection, which is when a site hides text meant to trick an AI agent. Even so, keep an eye on what it’s doing on banking or shopping sites.
What is AI Mode in Chrome?
AI Mode is Google Search’s AI chat, and Chrome puts a shortcut to it in the address bar and on the new tab page. It handles long questions with follow-ups, like “Plan a three-day beginner hiking trip near Seattle in October.” Besides text, you can attach tabs, files, and images.
In general, use the Gemini side panel for questions about the page you’re on, and AI Mode for questions about the wider web. Read What Is Chrome AI Mode and How Do You Use It? for more. Or, if you’d rather not see it, here’s how to turn off AI Mode in Chrome’s address bar.
How does Gemini help keep Chrome safe?
Chrome also runs Gemini Nano, a small model that works on your device, to help keep you safe.
- Scam detection: with Enhanced Protection on, Gemini Nano helps catch new scam pages, such as fake tech support or fake virus warnings.
- Notification warnings: Chrome flags notifications that look like scams, so you can unsubscribe fast.
- Quieter permission prompts: if you always block camera or location requests, Chrome shows those prompts in a smaller, less annoying way.
- Password changes: on supported sites, Chrome can change a leaked password for you.
These features depend on the On-device AI switch at the bottom of Settings > AI innovations. As a result, if you turn it off, scam detection may stop working.

How do I control or turn off Gemini in Chrome?
- AI settings: go to Settings > AI innovations, or type chrome://settings/ai in the address bar, to turn AI features on or off.
- Chat history: your Gemini chats are saved to Gemini Apps Activity. You can review or delete them at myactivity.google.com.
- Apps: turn off Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence in Gemini settings.
- Work devices: your admin decides whether Gemini in Chrome is on.
What’s coming next for Gemini in Chrome?
Google has announced voice typing, which lets you speak into text boxes on websites while Gemini cleans up the words. In addition, Chrome is adding WebMCP, which lets websites offer tools Gemini can use directly. It’s also adding the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open shopping standard built with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target. Finally, on computers, auto browse will work with Gemini Spark, Google’s AI agent app.
FAQ
Is Gemini in Chrome free?
Yes. Gemini in Chrome is free with a Google account. The one exception is Auto Browse, which needs a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra plan.
Why don’t I see the Gemini icon in Chrome?
The Gemini icon only shows up if you’re signed in, 18 or older, in a supported country, and using a supported language. So update Chrome and check your language setting. On a work account, ask your admin.
Does Gemini in Chrome read all my tabs?
No. Gemini reads the page you’re on when you ask it something, plus any tabs you add with the + button. Other tabs stay private unless you add them.
Does Gemini in Chrome work on a regular Chromebook?
On ChromeOS, Gemini in Chrome is only on Chromebook Plus models. However, other Chromebooks can still use gemini.google.com and AI Mode.
Where should you start?
Try page summaries and tab comparisons first, since they work on almost any site. Then, once you catch yourself typing the same prompt twice, save it as a Skill. If you pay for AI Pro or Ultra, give auto browse a small job first, like checking whether a store has something in stock. After that, you can trust it with bigger tasks.
