Google just brought Gemini Spark to the Mac. It’s an AI agent that does not just answer questions. It can dig through your files and get real tasks done on its own. Here is what it does, who can use it, and how to set it up.
What Gemini Spark Actually Does
Spark lives inside the Gemini app for Mac. Instead of waiting for you to ask a question, it can work in the background on things like sorting messy PDFs out of your Downloads folder or pulling numbers from saved invoices to build a budget spreadsheet on a schedule you set.
Google is also rolling out connections to outside apps, including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals, so Spark can design a flyer, book a table, or line up an apartment tour for you. These connections are rolling out on web and mobile first. Google says Mac support is coming “in the coming weeks,” so do not worry if you do not see them on your Mac yet.
Who Can Use It Right Now
This is the part to know before you go looking for it. Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta, and right now it is limited:
- Tier: You need a Google AI Ultra subscription. It is not available on the free plan, Google AI Plus, or standard Gemini access.
- Region: It is only rolling out in the United States for now.
- Age: Google requires users to be 18 or older.
- App version: You need Gemini desktop app version 1.80.15.516 or later.
If you do not meet all four of these, you likely will not see Spark yet, even if you update the app.
How to Turn On Gemini Spark on Mac

- Open the Gemini app on your Mac. If you do not have it, download it from gemini.google/mac.
- Check your app version (Gemini > About Gemini) and update if it is older than 1.80.15.516, the version Spark requires.
- Confirm you are signed in with a Google AI Ultra account. Spark will not appear under any other plan.
- Look for the Spark tab in the app’s sidebar.
- Choose the specific folders you want Spark to work with. Spark can only read, organize, or change files in the folders you link, and you can remove access from the sidebar at any time.
- Connected apps like Canva and Dropbox are rolling out to web and mobile first, with Mac support coming in the following weeks. Once available, look for a connected apps option in the Spark tab to sign in to each one.
Quick Tips
- Spark works on files stored locally on your Mac, not just things in the cloud, so it is worth checking what folders you give it access to.
- Since Spark can act without you asking each time, check in on what it has done every so often, especially early on.
- No Google AI Ultra plan? You can still use the regular Gemini app and chat features. Spark is the only part locked behind Ultra right now.
Gemini Spark turns the Gemini app into more of a helper that acts, not just a chatbot that talks. If you have Google AI Ultra in the US, updating your app and turning on Spark is all it takes to try it.
