How to Translate a Webpage in Chrome on iPhone/iPad

To translate a webpage in Chrome on iPhone or iPad, open the page, tap the language name that appears at the top of the screen, and Chrome translates it instantly. If no prompt appears, tap the three-dot More menu and select Translate. You can also highlight specific text and tap Google Translate to convert just that selection.

What you need before you start

This works on the Chrome app for iPhone and iPad running a current version of iOS or iPadOS. You do not need a Google account, but signing in keeps your language preferences synced across devices. Chrome’s translate feature supports more than 100 languages.

How do I translate a full webpage in Chrome on iPhone?

  1. Open Chrome on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to the page you want to translate.
  3. If Chrome detects a different language, a bar appears at the top offering to translate it. Tap the language name to translate the page.
  4. If you don’t see the prompt, tap More (the three dots in the toolbar), then tap Translate.
  5. To always translate pages in that language automatically, tap Settings in the translate bar, then choose Always translate [language].

How do I translate just part of a page?

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome.
  2. Touch and hold to highlight the text you want translated.
  3. Tap Google Translate from the pop-up menu.
  4. Tap the Speak icon if you want the translation read aloud.

If you highlight more than 5,000 characters, Chrome shows a Translate Full Page option instead of translating just the selection.

How do I change my default translation language?

  1. Tap More, then Settings, then Languages.
  2. Tap Add Language and choose the language you want Chrome to offer or translate into.
  3. Tap a language in the list, then tap Offer to translate to have Chrome prompt you for that language going forward.

How do I turn off Chrome’s translate prompts on iPhone?

  1. Tap More, then Settings, then Languages.
  2. Turn off Translate Pages.

You can also stop Chrome from offering to translate one specific language: open a page in that language, tap Settings in the translate bar, and choose Never translate [language].

FAQ

Does Chrome for iPhone translate pages automatically?

Chrome only translates automatically if you previously chose Always translate for that language. Otherwise, it shows a one-tap prompt and waits for you to confirm.

Why isn’t the Translate option showing up?

Try refreshing the page first. If Translate still doesn’t appear in the More menu, that page’s language may not be supported for translation, or Chrome may already recognize it as your device language.

Can I translate a page without an internet connection?

No. Chrome’s translate feature sends text to Google’s translation service, so you need an active internet connection for it to work.

Does translating a page change the original text permanently?

No. Translation only changes what you see on screen. Reload the page or tap Show original to see the untranslated version again.

Next steps

Chrome’s built-in translate tool on iPhone and iPad turns any webpage into one you can actually read, whether that’s a full page or just a highlighted sentence. Once you set your preferred languages, most sites translate themselves from then on with a single tap.
