NotebookLM Is Now Gemini Notebook: What Changed

By

Updated

NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook. Google renamed it on July 16, 2026, but it is still the same standalone research tool at notebooklm.google, run by the same team, with your existing notebooks and sources untouched.

What actually changed

Only the name and a few new features changed. Nothing you built disappeared. Your notebooks, sources, and Audio Overviews are all still there under the new name.

Google says the rename reflects the tool doing more work across its AI lineup, not a product shutdown. It is the same team that has run the product since it launched as Project Tailwind at Google I/O in 2023.

What is new in Gemini Notebook?

  1. Code execution. Notebooks can now run code in a secure cloud computer to do data analysis grounded in your uploaded sources, instead of just summarizing them.
  2. Gemini app syncing. Notebooks created in the Gemini app now sync with the standalone Gemini Notebook site, so the same notebook is available in both places.
  3. Coming to AI Mode. Google says notebooks will be brought directly into AI Mode in Search, though this has not rolled out yet.

Who gets the new code execution feature first?

Code execution inside notebooks is rolling out first to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google says it will reach all Pro users on the web in the coming weeks. Free-tier users are not mentioned in the rollout so far.

Do I need to do anything?

No action is required. If you had NotebookLM bookmarked or open, the same link still works, it now just shows the Gemini Notebook name and logo. Existing notebooks, uploaded sources, and any Audio Overviews you made keep working exactly as before.

FAQ

Is Gemini Notebook a different product from NotebookLM?

No. Gemini Notebook is the renamed version of NotebookLM. It is the same product, same team, same web address, just a new name and a few added features.

Will my old NotebookLM notebooks still work?

Yes. All existing notebooks, sources, notes, and Audio Overviews carry over automatically. Nothing needs to be re-created.

Is code execution available to free users?

Not yet. Google has only confirmed the rollout for Google AI Ultra subscribers and certain Workspace business plans first, with a wider rollout to Pro users planned in the following weeks.

Where can I still access it?

The same address, notebooklm.google, still works and now displays the Gemini Notebook branding.

Next steps

If you already use NotebookLM, there is nothing to change on your end beyond getting used to the new name. If you have not tried it, Gemini Notebook remains Google’s tool for turning your own documents, notes, and links into summaries, Audio Overviews, and now, code-backed analysis.
