How to Create a Custom Gem in the Gemini App (Free)

Updated

A Gem is a custom version of Gemini that you set up once and reuse for repeat tasks, like a writing editor or a coding helper. To create one, open the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, click Explore Gems, then New Gem, give it a name and instructions, and click Save. Gems are free on every Gemini plan.

Once you save a Gem, it also shows up in the Gemini mobile app and the Gemini side panel in Google Workspace, so you can start the same custom chat anywhere.

What you need before you start

You need the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com on a computer, signed in to a personal Google Account. You must be 13 or older, or the applicable age in your country. This feature is not tied to a specific Chrome version. Note that you can create, edit, or delete custom Gems only in the web app, not in the mobile app.

How do you create a Gem in the Gemini app?

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in to your Google Account.
  2. In the left panel, click Explore Gems.
  3. Click New Gem to open the Gem builder.
  4. Type a name for your Gem in the Name box.
  5. Write what you want it to do in the Instructions box. Cover the role it should play, the task, useful background, and the format you want back.
  6. On the right, enter a test prompt to preview how your Gem replies. The preview does not save your Gem on its own.
  7. Click Save. Your new Gem now appears in your Gems list, ready to use.

How do you make your Gem smarter?

Two options help a lot. To sharpen your wording, write a rough sentence about your goal, then click Use Gemini to re-write instructions (the wand icon) and edit the result. To give your Gem source material, look under Knowledge, click Add files, and upload a document from your device or Google Drive. Your Gem can then reference those files in every chat.

FAQ

Is creating a Gem free?

Yes. Gems are free on every Gemini plan, including the free tier. You do not need Google AI Pro or Ultra to build or use a custom Gem.

Can I create a Gem on my phone?

No. You can only create, edit, or delete custom Gems in the Gemini web app on a computer. After you save a Gem there, it appears automatically in the Gemini mobile app so you can chat with it on the go.

Can I upload files to a Gem?

Yes. In the Gem builder, under Knowledge, click Add files to upload a document from your device or add one from Google Drive. Adding a Drive file needs Keep Activity turned on and Google Workspace connected to Gemini.

How do I edit or delete a Gem?

Open the Gemini web app and go to your Gems list, then choose the Gem you want to change. You can edit its name and instructions or delete it there. As with creating, you can only edit or delete custom Gems in the web app, not the mobile app.

Wrapping up

Gems turn a prompt you keep retyping into a saved helper you can open in one click. Start with a simple one, like an email editor, then add instructions and a knowledge file as you learn what works. When you want to change it later, open the Gem and edit it in the web app.
