How to Use Google Meet on a Chromebook: Complete Guide

Google Meet works on every Chromebook with no install needed. Here’s how to open it, join calls fast, and fix common camera or audio problems.

Google Meet works on every Chromebook without installing anything. You can join a call straight from your browser, pin a shortcut to your Shelf for one click access, or use the camera tools built into newer Chromebook Plus models. Here is everything you need to open, join, and fix Google Meet on your Chromebook.

3 Ways to Open Google Meet on a Chromebook

You don’t need to download anything to use Google Meet. Pick whichever method fits how you work.

  1. Open it in Chrome. Open a new tab and go to meet.google.com. Sign in with your Google Account if you are not already.
  2. Use the meet.new shortcut. Press Ctrl + N to open a new window, then type meet.new in the address bar and hit Enter. This skips straight to a meeting preview screen where you can start or join a call.
  3. Install it as an app from the Launcher. Open meet.google.com in Chrome, click the three-dot menu in the top right, choose More tools, then Create shortcut. Check the box for Open as window and click Create. Google Meet now opens in its own window, separate from your regular browser tabs, and shows up in your Launcher and Shelf.

If your Chromebook supports Android apps, you can also install the Google Meet app from the Play Store for a more mobile-style layout. Most people get a better experience using the web version, since it has the full set of features and runs faster.

How to Join or Start a Meeting

There are a few ways to get into a call once Meet is open.

  • From a meeting link. Click the link from an email, calendar invite, or chat message. It opens straight into the meeting.
  • From a meeting code. Go to meet.google.com, click Enter a code, and type the code from your invite.
  • From Google Calendar. Open the event on calendar.google.com and click Join with Google Meet.
  • From Gmail. Scroll to the Meet section in the left sidebar and click New meeting or Join a meeting.

The first time you join, Chrome asks for permission to use your camera and microphone. Click Allow. If you accidentally clicked Block, you can fix it without leaving the page. Click the camera icon in the address bar, switch both toggles to Allow, then refresh.

Turn On Camera and Mic Access for Good

If Meet says your camera or mic is blocked and you don’t see a prompt, check your Chromebook’s privacy settings directly.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security.
  3. Select Site settings, then Camera or Microphone.
  4. Make sure meet.google.com is listed under Allowed, not Blocked.

Chromebook Plus: The Built-In Video Call Panel

If you’re on a Chromebook Plus, you get extra tools that don’t exist on a regular Chromebook or in the Meet app on other platforms. Whenever an app uses your camera, a video call panel appears on your Shelf.

  • Privacy controls. Turn your camera and mic on or off with one click, right from the Shelf, without opening Meet itself.
  • Camera framing. If your Chromebook has a wide-angle camera, this keeps you centered and zoomed in automatically as you move.
  • Mic test. Records a few seconds of audio and plays it back so you can check how you sound before a call.
  • AI backgrounds. Open the video call panel, select Create with AI, pick a theme, and your Chromebook generates a custom background image for you.
  • Mute nudge. Quietly reminds you if you’re talking while muted. The audio for this never leaves your device.

You’ll find all of these by clicking the camera icon that appears on your Shelf during a call, then selecting the expand arrow.

Useful Keyboard Shortcuts During a Call

These work once you are inside a Meet session.

  • Full-screen key, hides the Shelf and browser tabs so the meeting fills your screen. Press it again to go back.
  • Ctrl + /, shows the full list of Meet keyboard shortcuts.
  • Alt + [ and Alt + ], snap the Meet window to the left or right half of your screen. Useful if you want notes or a document open next to your call.
  • Ctrl + Show windows key, takes a full screenshot. Handy for saving a shared slide.

Good to Know

  • Google recommends at least 3.2 Mbps of internet speed for smooth HD group calls. If your video keeps freezing, that’s the first thing to check.
  • Closing tabs you’re not using frees up memory that Meet can use instead, especially helpful on lower-RAM Chromebooks.
  • A wired Ethernet connection, using a USB-C dongle, is more stable than Wi-Fi if you have one available.
  • Live captions are available in every Meet call. Click the three-dot menu during a call and select Turn on captions.

Fixing Common Google Meet Problems on a Chromebook

“Your browser doesn’t support Meet.” This almost always means ChromeOS is out of date. Go to Settings, then About ChromeOS, then Check for updates. Devices made before 2017 may no longer get updates that support Meet’s video codecs. If that’s the case, the Meet app from the Play Store, if available on your model, is the only path forward.

Camera or mic not working. Check Site settings as shown above first. If those look correct, close all tabs using the camera, since some apps lock it, then reopen Meet.

Echo or feedback during group calls. Ask anyone in the same room to use headphones. Two open microphones picking up the same speaker is the most common cause.

Meet keeps freezing or dropping. Switch your router from the 2.4 GHz band to 5 GHz if it supports both, and move closer to the router. Restarting your Chromebook clears out background processes that build up over a long day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Meet need Google Workspace?
No. Personal Google accounts can host meetings up to 60 minutes long. School and work accounts on Google Workspace get longer time limits and extra features.

Can I use Google Meet without Wi-Fi?
You need an internet connection of some kind. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, you can tether your Chromebook to a phone’s mobile hotspot.

Is there a dedicated Google Meet app for ChromeOS?
Not a separate ChromeOS-only app. The web version at meet.google.com is the main way to use it, and you can install it as a standalone window using the Create Shortcut method above. Chromebooks that support Android apps can also use the mobile app from the Play Store.

Can I record a Google Meet call on a Chromebook?
Recording is available to Google Workspace and Google One Premium subscribers. Click the three-dot menu during a call and select Record meeting if your account has access.

Google Meet runs natively on every Chromebook with no install required, and Chromebook Plus models add real conveniences like camera framing and one-click privacy controls. Once your camera and mic permissions are set, joining a call takes seconds, no matter which method you use to get there.
