How to Enable Background Blur for Video Calls on Chromebook

A messy room behind you can pull focus during a video call. Your Chromebook can blur the background for you, right at the system level, so it works the same way in Google Meet, Zoom, or almost any app that uses your camera. You turn it on once, and it stays on until you switch it off.

The best part is that you do not set this up inside each app. ChromeOS handles the blur itself, so you do not have to hunt through Zoom or Meet menus every time.

Turn On Background Blur for Video Calls

Background blur lives in a small camera panel that shows up only while your camera is in use. Here is how to find it and switch it on.

1. Open the app you use for video calls, like Google Meet or Zoom, and start or join a call so your camera turns on.
2. Look at the shelf at the bottom of your screen. A small camera button appears there whenever an app is using your camera.
3. Click that camera button to open the camera controls panel.
4. Find Background blur and turn it on. Your video preview blurs right away so you can check how it looks.
5. Go back to your call. The blur now applies to what everyone else sees.

To turn it off, open the same camera panel from the shelf and switch Background blur back off. You can flip it on and off as many times as you like.

If You Do Not See the Blur Option

System-level background blur is not on every Chromebook. It runs on your device using the built-in processor, so it needs a fairly recent model. If the option is missing, check these things.

• Make sure your camera is actually on. The camera button only shows up in the shelf while an app is using it. No camera in use means no panel.
• Update ChromeOS. Go to Settings, then About ChromeOS, and click Check for updates. Restart if an update installs.
• Check your model. Background blur is most common on Chromebook Plus models and newer Chromebooks. Older or budget models may not support it.

If your Chromebook does not have the feature, you still have a backup. Google Meet and Zoom both offer their own blur inside the app, so you can blur your background that way instead.

• On Chromebook Plus models, the same camera panel often includes extra effects like lighting adjustment and even AI-made backgrounds, not just blur.
• Because the blur is built into ChromeOS, it works across apps. Set it once and it carries over to your next call in a different app.
