To remove Ask Gemini from Chrome, right-click the Gemini button at the top right and choose Unpin Gemini. The button goes, but a keyboard shortcut can still open Gemini. To stop that, open Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome and turn everything on that page off.
Applies to: Chrome on Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS. If you don’t see a Gemini button, it hasn’t rolled out to you yet. Work and school computers may have these settings locked by an admin.
Where does Ask Gemini show up in Chrome?
Google calls the feature Gemini in Chrome, though some buttons and menus say Ask Gemini. It’s the AI assistant that can read the page you’re looking at and answer questions about it. (We cover the rest in our Gemini in Chrome guide.)
You’ll run into it in four places. There’s the sparkle-icon button at the top right, and a keyboard shortcut that works even when the button is hidden. On Windows, that shortcut is usually Alt + G. Gemini also opens in the side panel next to the page, and the address bar can show an AI Mode button or Gemini suggestions. They don’t all turn off from the same place, which is why removing Gemini can feel like whack-a-mole.
How do I remove the Ask Gemini button?
- Find the sparkle icon at the top right of Chrome, near your tabs.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Unpin Gemini.
Changed your mind? Right-click the top of the browser and choose Pin Gemini.
How do I turn off Gemini completely in Chrome settings?
This is the part most people skip, and it’s why the shortcut keeps working after the button is gone.
- Open the three-dot menu and go to Settings.
- Click AI innovations in the sidebar, then Gemini in Chrome.
- Turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser.
- Turn off Show Gemini in system tray and turn on keyboard shortcut. Mac users will see “menu bar” instead of “system tray.”
- If any shortcuts are listed, click the X beside each one.
- Turn off Page content sharing. Without it, Gemini can’t see what’s on your screen.
- Turn off whatever else is on the page, then restart Chrome.
You can skip the menus by pasting chrome://settings/ai/gemini into the address bar. Google has renamed this section a few times, so if you don’t see AI innovations, look for AI or Google AI.
How do I remove AI Mode and Gemini from the address bar?
The AI Mode button in the address bar has its own setting, so the steps above leave it alone. We’ve covered it separately in How to Turn Off AI Mode in the Chrome Address Bar.
How do I block Gemini in Chrome for every user on a Windows PC?
On a family PC, or one kids use for schoolwork, you may want Gemini off for everyone rather than profile by profile. Chrome has a policy for that called GeminiSettings. A value of 1 means Gemini isn’t allowed.
You’ll be editing the Windows Registry, so be careful and add only the value below. Afterwards, Chrome will show a “managed by your organization” notice. That’s normal for any policy, and it disappears if you remove the value.
- Press Windows + R, type regedit and press Enter. Say yes to the permission prompt.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome. If the Google or Chrome key isn’t there, right-click the key above it, choose New > Key and create it.
- Right-click the Chrome key and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name it GeminiSettings, double-click it and set the value to 1.
- Close Chrome completely, open it again and go to chrome://policy. Click Reload policies and check that GeminiSettings shows 1.
Delete the value and restart Chrome to undo it. On a work or school machine, don’t bother. IT sets this from the Google Admin console.
What doesn’t remove Ask Gemini?
Unpinning on its own, as covered above. The shortcut survives it.
Reinstalling Chrome doesn’t help either. Gemini is part of Chrome, so a fresh copy comes with it, and sync pulls your old settings back down anyway. Clearing cache and cookies does nothing for the same reason, and you won’t find Gemini on the Extensions page because it isn’t an extension.
Turning off Gemini in your Google Account or the Gemini app is a closer miss. Gemini may stop answering, but the button can still sit in Chrome’s toolbar. You still need the Chrome settings.
FAQ
Can I uninstall Gemini from Chrome?
No, it’s built in. Unpinning it and turning off its settings is as close as you can get.
Does turning off Gemini stop it from reading my pages?
Yes, as long as Page content sharing is off.
Why did the Gemini button come back?
Most likely, Show Gemini at the top of the browser is still on. Switch it off in Settings. If you use Chrome on more than one computer, check each one.
Why can’t I change the Gemini settings?
If the switches are greyed out, someone else manages your browser. Visit chrome://management to confirm, then talk to whoever runs IT.
The short version
Unpin the Gemini button, then turn off everything under Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome and delete the shortcuts. The registry policy is only worth it if you’re locking down a shared Windows PC.
