Chrome stops offering to save a card when the Save and fill payment methods switch is off. Open Settings, then Autofill and passwords, then Payment methods, and turn that switch on. If it was already on, the card is probably saved already, or the checkout form is one Chrome cannot read.
Applies to: Google Chrome on a computer. Not version-specific. The steps follow the desktop menus, and phone menus are laid out a little differently.
Why is Chrome not asking to save my card?
Four different things produce the same silence. Each one leaves a clue, so you can usually spot yours without trying every fix.
- The main switch is off. Chrome never asks, on any site. Open the Payment methods page and look at the first toggle.
- The card is already saved. Chrome has nothing new to offer. Your card shows up in the list on that same page.
- The card lives in Google Wallet. It appears in the list, but Chrome sends you to Wallet to change it.
- One site is the problem. Other shops trigger the prompt, and this one never does. Google gives two reasons: the site may not be secure enough for Chrome to share saved info, or Chrome cannot find the fields on the form.
How do I make Chrome offer to save a card?
Work through these in order. The first two steps cover the most common cause.
- Click the three-dot More menu, then Settings, then Autofill and passwords, then Payment methods.
- Turn on Save and fill payment methods. It sits at the top of the page. Google says it is on by default, so if yours is off, someone or something switched it. The same switch also controls loyalty card autofill, so you may have noticed that quietly stopped too.
- Scroll down to the saved cards. If your card is there, Chrome will not offer to save it again. To change it, click More beside the card and choose Edit.
- If the card is saved in Google Wallet, make the change in Google Wallet instead. Chrome will point you there.
- Try a fresh purchase. Type the card into the checkout form and submit it. Google says Chrome may offer to save payment details when you submit a form with new or updated ones.
Watch the timing. The offer appears after you press the pay or submit button, not while you type. If you close the tab right away, you can miss it. Google also says Chrome only may offer, so a missing prompt on one attempt is not proof that something is broken.
If it fails on one site only
Test the same card on a different store. If the prompt appears there, your settings are fine, and the first store is the issue. Look at the address bar. A “Not secure” label is a good reason for Chrome to hold back. Google does not list a Chrome-side fix for unreadable form fields, so the practical choices are a different browser tab on the secure version of the site, or paying another way.
Why does Chrome save my card but not the security code?
That is a separate switch, Save security codes, on the same Payment methods page. When it is on, Chrome asks whether to keep your code the first time you enter payment info on a merchant site.
Careful: turning Save security codes off deletes the saved codes for every card, from Google Wallet and from your devices. Only turn it off if you mean to clear them all.
What does not fix this?
- Clearing the cache. The switch is a setting, not stored page data. Clearing cache and cookies leaves it exactly as it was.
- Deleting Autofill form data. Google says this does not remove payment info kept in Google Wallet. A card Chrome still knows about is a card it will not ask to save.
- Toggling Save security codes off and on to “reset” it. It wipes the codes for all your cards, and the prompt to save a card is controlled by a different switch anyway.
- Resubmitting the same checkout page again and again. If Chrome cannot read the form fields, the tenth try looks the same as the first.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Chrome save my card on one site but not another?
Per Google, Chrome holds back on sites that are not secure enough, and on forms where it cannot detect the fields. Your own settings apply to every site equally, so a single holdout points at the site.
Where do I edit a card saved in Google Wallet?
Go to the Payment methods page and click More beside the card. Chrome sends you to Google Wallet, because Wallet cards can only be edited or deleted there.
Can I make Chrome check it is me before it fills a card?
Yes. Turn on Verify it’s you to autofill payment methods on the same page. It is a per-device setting and needs a screen lock on that device.
Will a saved card show up on my other devices?
If you are signed in to Chrome with your Google Account, changes you make to payment info also appear on your other signed-in devices. Make sure the second device is signed in to the same account.
Most of the time the answer is one switch. Check Save and fill payment methods first, then look at the saved list for a card that is already there. If only one store ignores you, the store is the problem, not Chrome.
