How to Fix Chrome Video Playback Error 152-13

A persistent error code 152-13 prevents videos from playing directly within Google Chrome on Android devices. When attempting to play a video embedded on a web page, the player fails to buffer and throws a toast message or inline error stating: “152-13 error code. Open vids in YouTube.”

This happens when Chrome’s internal video rendering pipeline conflicts with your system’s default media handling, or when embedded YouTube frames fail to authenticate inside a standard mobile browser tab.

Too technical? Okay, ignore for that now, and let’s work on possible workarounds.

If you are experiencing this error across multiple web pages or on multiple devices on the same network, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Method 1: Force Stop Chrome and Clear the Local Cache

Corrupted application cache can disrupt video decoding and token exchanges for embedded frames.

  1. Long-press the Chrome app icon on your Android device.
  2. Tap the App Info icon (represented by an “i” inside a circle).
  3. Tap Force Stop, then confirm the action to terminate all active browser background processes.
  4. Select Storage & cache (or Storage).
  5. Tap Clear Cache.
  6. Relaunch Chrome and test the video playback.

Method 2: Reset Android System Webview

Many embedded video players rely on Android System WebView to render media components smoothly inside web apps.

  1. Open your device’s main Settings menu.
  2. Navigate to Apps > All Apps (or Manage Apps).
  3. Scroll down and select Android System WebView.
  4. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Uninstall updates.
  5. Once uninstalled, open the Google Play Store, search for “Android System WebView,” and tap Update to install the latest clean build.

Method 3: Reset App Links (Open Vids in YouTube)

Because the error code specifically instructs you to open the media file in the standalone YouTube app, the system’s intent handlers may be misconfigured.

  1. Open Settings on your Android device and go to Apps > Default apps.
  2. Tap Opening links.
  3. Scroll through the list and select YouTube.
  4. Ensure that the toggle for Open supported links is turned On.
  5. Under Supported web addresses, confirm that standard video links (youtube.com, youtu.be) are assigned to open automatically inside the application rather than trying to force-load inside a restricted Chrome tab.

Method 4: Turn Off Hardware Acceleration Flags

If the error is related to hardware decoding limitations on certain mobile processors, toggling underlying graphics flags can force software rendering.

  1. Open a new tab in Chrome and type chrome://flags into the address bar, then hit Enter.
  2. In the top search bar, type Media.
  3. Locate flags related to hardware-accelerated video decoding (such as #hardware-video-decode or hardware-accelerated rendering layers).
  4. Change the drop-down menu selection from Default or Enabled to Disabled.
  5. Tap the Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen to restart the browser and apply the parameters.
