Fix Chrome Downloads Stuck on “Pending” on Android

Updated On:

A download that just sits on “Pending” and never starts is one of the more frustrating Chrome bugs on Android. It usually comes down to a weak connection, a storage issue, or stale app data. These fixes will get your downloads moving again.

Clear the Jam: Fixes to Try in Order

Start with the Simple Stuff

  1. Check your internet connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if one works better.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in Chrome and select Downloads. Cancel the stuck download, then try it again.
  3. Restart your phone and try the download once more.
  4. Make sure your phone has enough storage. Go to Settings, tap Storage, and free up space if it’s nearly full.

Clear Chrome’s App Data

If the basics didn’t work, stale cache or data inside Chrome is often the culprit.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings and tap Apps (or App Management, depending on your phone).
  2. Find and tap Chrome.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Clear Cache, then try your download again.
  5. If it’s still stuck, go back and tap Clear Data.

Note: this will sign you out of Chrome and reset your browser settings.

Check Download Manager Permissions

Chrome relies on Android’s Download Manager to handle files. If it’s disabled, downloads will never start.

  1. Go to Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Tap the filter or menu icon and choose Show system apps.
  3. Find Download Manager in the list and tap it.
  4. Make sure it is Enabled. If it shows as disabled, tap Enable.

Quick Tips

  • If you’re on a VPN, try turning it off before downloading. VPNs can sometimes interfere with Chrome’s download process.
  • Downloading to an SD card? A corrupted or slow card can cause pending issues. Try switching the download location to internal storage in Chrome Settings under Downloads.
  • If nothing else works, updating Chrome from the Play Store can fix bugs that cause this problem.

Most stuck downloads on Chrome for Android clear up after cleaning the cache or re-enabling Download Manager. If the problem keeps coming back, a Chrome update is usually the long-term fix.
