Chrome can now fill in and sign PDF forms on its own. No extension, no Acrobat, and no uploading your document to a random website. The tools live right inside Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer, you just need to know where to look.
If you have ever installed a PDF extension just to add a signature to a form, you can finally remove it. Here is how to use the built-in tools.
How to Fill In a PDF Form
- Open the PDF file in Chrome. You can drag it into a Chrome tab, or right-click the file and choose Open with > Google Chrome.
- Click into any text field on the form. Chrome detects fillable fields and lets you type directly into them.
- Type your answer, then press Tab to jump to the next field.
- Repeat until every field is filled in.
How to Sign a PDF in Chrome
Chrome does not have a button labeled “Sign.” Instead, you add a signature using the Draw tool, the icon that looks like a small scribble in the PDF toolbar.
- Click the Draw icon in the toolbar at the top of the PDF viewer.
- A panel opens on the right with a pen, a highlighter, and an eraser.
- Select the pen and adjust the thickness and color if you want.
- Use your mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen to draw your signature in the right spot on the document.
- If it does not come out right, click the eraser tool and try again, or use the undo button in the toolbar.
Once you are happy with it, click the Download icon to save the signed PDF to your computer. Chrome also lets you click the Google Drive icon to send the finished file straight to a folder called “Saved from Chrome” instead, so you can find it later from any device.
Quick Tips
- A drawn signature in Chrome is a visual mark, not a verified digital signature. It works fine for everyday paperwork like permission slips and internal forms, but contracts that need a legal audit trail still call for a dedicated e-signature service.
- If you hit the regular Save button instead of Download, Chrome may save a blank copy without your changes. Always use Download after filling in or signing a form.
- If the Draw icon is missing, check that Chrome is updated to the latest version. Go to Settings > About Chrome to check.
Filling out and signing a PDF form in Chrome takes just a few clicks and stays inside one tab. There is no extension to install, no account to create, and no need to send your document anywhere else first.
