Chrome’s reading mode used to open in a cramped side panel next to the page you were already looking at. That changed in April 2026. It now takes over the whole window, strips out ads, videos, and clutter, and gives you a clean page of text. Here is how to use it.

How to Open Reading Mode in Chrome
- Open any article or text-heavy page in Google Chrome.
- Right-click anywhere on the page.
- Select Open in reading mode.
- Chrome fills the entire window with a clean, text-only version of the page.
To go back to the original page, click the X or press Escape.
You can also pin reading mode to your toolbar. Click the Settings icon inside reading mode and select Pin reading mode. After that, a reading mode button appears next to your address bar so you can turn it on with one click.
Good to Know
- You can adjust the font size, font style, and line spacing inside reading mode using the settings panel.
- Reading mode does not work on every page. Video pages, forums, and some dashboards will not trigger it.
- If you do not see the right-click option, update Chrome via the three-dot menu, then Help, then About Google Chrome.
Reading mode is a quick way to focus on what you actually came to read. Once you pin it to the toolbar, it is one click away on any page.
