Does Google Docs Have Dark Mode? Here’s the Answer

Google Docs does not have a built-in dark mode on desktop. But there are a few ways to get one, and on mobile it is easier than you think.

Dark Mode on Mobile (Android and iPhone)

The Google Docs app supports dark mode natively on both Android and iPhone. It follows your system theme setting automatically, or you can set it manually.

1. Open the Google Docs app on your phone.
2. Tap the hamburger menu (three lines) in the top-left corner.
3. Tap Settings.
4. Tap Choose theme.
5. Select Dark.

Your documents will now display with a dark background.

Dark Mode on Desktop (Chrome Browser)

On desktop, Google Docs keeps the white document background even when you enable dark mode in Chrome or your operating system. The menus go dark, but the page itself stays white. The best workaround is a Chrome extension.

Using the Dark Reader extension:

1. Go to the Dark Reader page on the Chrome Web Store.
2. Click Add to Chrome, then Add extension.
3. Open Google Docs in a new tab.
4. Click the Dark Reader icon in your toolbar to turn it on.

Dark Reader inverts the colors on the page, giving you a dark background with light text. You can adjust the brightness, contrast, and sepia tone from the extension popup.

Try Chrome’s Forced Dark Mode (Experimental)

Note: Flags are experimental features and can make Chrome unstable. If Chrome behaves unexpectedly after enabling a flag, return to chrome://flags and click Reset all.

1. Type chrome://flags in your address bar and press Enter.
2. Search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
3. Set it to Enabled.
4. Click Relaunch to restart Chrome.

This forces a dark theme on all websites, including Google Docs. Results vary by page, so it may not look perfect everywhere.

Quick Tips

• Dark Reader works on Google Sheets and Slides too, not just Docs.
• If your document prints with a dark background, turn Dark Reader off before printing.
• On Chromebook, enabling dark mode in Settings does not affect Google Docs on desktop.

Mobile is the easiest path to a proper Google Docs dark mode. On desktop, Dark Reader is the most reliable option until Google adds a native setting.
