Give Each Account Its Own Chrome Icon on Your Taskbar

Tired of logging out of one Gmail to check another, or juggling two Slack accounts in the same window? Chrome can give each account its own icon on your taskbar. Click it, and Chrome opens straight into that identity, already logged in. Here is how to set it up.

Why a Profile Beats Incognito for This

Each Chrome profile keeps its own logins, cookies, bookmarks, and extensions. That means you can stay signed into two accounts of the same service at the same time, and both stay logged in even after you close Chrome. Incognito cannot do this. It forgets everything the moment you close the window. A profile remembers, which is exactly what you want for an account you use every day.

Create a Profile for One Account

1. Click your profile picture in the top right corner of Chrome.
2. Click Add at the bottom of the menu.
3. Choose Sign in and use the account you want this profile tied to, or pick Continue without an account for a clean, separate identity.
4. Give it a clear name and color so you can tell it apart at a glance, like “Work Gmail” or “Client A”.
5. Sign in to the website you want this profile to hold. From now on, this profile stays logged into that account on its own.

Pin the Profile to Your Taskbar (Windows)

This is the part most people miss. Chrome can create a shortcut that opens one specific profile, so it acts like a separate app icon for that account.

1. While you are inside the profile you want, click the profile picture in the top right.
2. Click the Edit (pencil) icon, then turn on Create desktop shortcut. Chrome adds a shortcut for that profile to your desktop.
3. Find the new shortcut on your desktop. Right-click it and choose Pin to taskbar.
4. Click that taskbar icon anytime. Chrome opens straight into that profile, with the right account already signed in.

If You’re on a Mac

macOS does not expose per-profile shortcuts as cleanly as Windows. The simplest route: open the profile from Chrome’s profile menu each time, or use a free tool like the built-in Automator to make a small app that launches Chrome with a specific profile. It takes a few extra minutes to set up, but once done, it pins to your Dock just like any other app.

Good to Know

• Each profile has its own extensions. A “client” profile can stay clean with only the tools that the job needs, while your main profile keeps everything else.
• Recommendations and tracking stay separate, too. A shopping profile keeps product ads and suggestions out of your main account.
• You can make as many profiles as you like. Just keep the names and colors distinct so you always know which identity you are in.

Once each account has its own Chrome icon, the constant logging in and out disappears. You set it up once, and from then on, every identity is one click away on your taskbar.
