If you’re getting the “This site can’t be reached” error in Microsoft Edge, it usually means the browser couldn’t connect to the server hosting the site. This issue may be caused by a network problem, browser setting, DNS failure, or an issue with the website itself. Here’s how to fix it.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

Before diving into browser or system settings:

a. Try opening another website.
b. Switch to a different Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
c. Restart your router or modem.

If no sites are loading, the issue is with your internet connection.

2. Restart Edge and Your Device

Close all Edge tabs and restart the browser. If that doesn’t work, reboot your computer or mobile device.

3. Clear Edge’s Browsing Data

Edge - Delete Cache

Cached data and cookies can cause loading problems.

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top right of Edge.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
  3. Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear.
  4. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data, then click Clear now.

4. Disable Extensions

Some extensions (especially ad blockers or VPNs) can block page loading.

Edge Extensions
  1. Open the menu and go to Extensions.
  2. Toggle off all extensions.
  3. Reload the site.
  4. Re-enable extensions one by one to find the problematic one.

5. Flush DNS Cache

DNS issues often trigger this error. To flush the DNS cache:

On Windows:

a. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
b. Type:

ipconfig /flushdns

c. Press Enter.

On macOS:

a. Open Terminal.
b. Type:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

c. Enter your password and hit Enter.

6. Change DNS Server

Try switching to a public DNS like Google DNS or Cloudflare.

On Windows:

a. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Adapter options.
b. Right-click your active network > Properties.
c. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
d. Use the following DNS server addresses:

  • Preferred: 8.8.8.8
  • Alternate: 8.8.4.4
    e. Click OK.

On macOS:

a. Go to System Settings > Network.
b. Select your active connection > Details > DNS.
c. Add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

7. Disable Proxy Settings

Incorrect proxy settings can block websites.

a. Go to Settings > System > Open your computer’s proxy settings.
b. Turn off Use a proxy server if enabled.

8. Try InPrivate Mode

InPrivate mode disables extensions and uses a clean session.

a. Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + N (Mac).
b. Try loading the site there.

9. Reset Edge Settings

If the issue persists, try resetting the browser.

a. Go to Settings > Reset settings.
b. Click Restore settings to their default values.
c. Confirm the reset.

10. Try Another Browser

If the site still doesn’t load in Edge, try it in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. If it works there, Edge may be misconfigured.
