Chrome on Android to Get Automatic ‘Tab Decluttering’

Chrome Inactive Tabs

Google Chrome for Android is getting ready to test a new feature that will automatically declutter your tabs. According to an experimental Chrome flag in the Chromium Gerrit repository, this new feature will bring “auto-archival and deletion of inactive tabs”.

Auto-archival and Deletion of Inactive Tabs

Details are sparse at the moment. However, here is the full name and description of the new experimental flag:

Android Tab Declutter – Enables auto-archival and deletion of inactive tabs.

It is safe to assume this feature will build on the existing tab archive/resume feature. Chrome currently lets you temporarily pause inactive tabs.

Chrome Inactive Tabs

It is not clear if Chrome will give us the option to choose between archiving and deleting inactive tabs. Your browser history will remember those URLs, but do you want Chrome to delete/close tabs without your knowledge?

This feature is yet to land in the Canary build of Chrome. We will update this article when this feature is available for testing. For now, drop your questions and concerns in the comments field below.

Does this feature excite you? Are you a tab hoarder?

  1. Most people won’t need it or use it, but sure enough this and things like this will add tasks, consume resources, and slow the system even more. My new Chromebook with double the RAM and a better processor is slower than my 2016 one. Google might do better to just downsize and remove all of the youngsters with the impressive creds who come up with ever-more counterproductive ideas so these folks can find careers in which they can actually produce things that are worthwhile.

  2. The perfect feature for someone like me who is a chronic tabs hoarder!
Actually, I’ve switched to using Firefox on mobile because of 2 features, one of them being the tab archive feature (the other is the single tap reading-mode). Once this is available, I can consider using Chrome again.
