Google Assistant Not Working? Try These Steps

What happens when Google Assistant stops working on your phone, Google Home, or Google Home Hub? Or “Why is my Google Assistant not working?” I looked at dozens of such reports all over the web and reviewed all the recommended solutions.

This is what I found.

Google Home Not Responding

Let us look at all the possible situations and solutions for Google Home or the “OK Google” command not working.

Restart Google Home (All Devices)

The first step you should always try, which is the easiest, is to restart your device. If Google Assistant is not working on your phone, restart your phone. If your Google Home isn’t not responding, restart it using the following steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap on your Google Home / Google Home Mini / Google Home Hub, the device that isn’t working.
  3. Tap the Gear icon on the top right corner.
  4. Now tap the Settings icon (three dots) on the top right corner.
  5. Choose Reboot.

Disable Battery Saver Mode (Phone)

If you have Battery Saver Mode enabled on your phone, disable this and use Google Assistant again.

Google Assistant Not Working While Driving (Phone)

Note: Do not try to troubleshoot Assistant while driving. Do this only when your car is parked.

If Google Assistant is not working on your phone while driving, first try restarting your phone. If that does not help, here are the steps you can try.

Check if you have any third-party app like DriveMode installed. Apps like these can interfere with internet connectivity while you are driving. If you have DriveMode installed, try disabling or uninstalling it. Now, restart your phone for good measure, and try Google Assistant again!

Voice Control Not Working (Phone)

If Google Assistant cannot identify your voice on the phone, or if you need to say “OK Google” twice to start the Assistant, check the launcher that you are using.

Third-party launchers can occasionally cause issues with the Assistant. Switch to the default Android launcher, test Assistant, and see if it works. If it does, contact the developer of your launcher and provide details.
