Chrome to Let You Export and Import Experimental Flags

Google Chrome is working on a new feature that’ll let you export and import experimental flags from chrome://flags. Unsurprisingly, this new feature is also available as a flag.

If you’re anything like me, the first thing you do after installing Chrome on a new machine is head straight to chrome://flags. Whether it’s enabling Parallel Downloading, forcing Auto Dark Mode, or testing out the latest AI-powered tab management, these flags are what make the browser truly yours.

But let’s be honest: manually toggling twenty different flags every time you get a new Chromebook or switch to a Canary build is a massive pain.

Thankfully, Google is finally addressing this. A new commit in the Chromium Gerrit reveals that Chrome is adding a native Export and Import feature for experimental flags.

Who is this for?

While the average user might never touch a flag, this is a game-changer for two specific groups:

  1. Developers & Testers: If you are a web developer testing how a site performs under specific experimental conditions (like new rendering engines), you can now share your “flag profile” with your entire team. No more “it works on my machine” because someone forgot to enable a specific API.
  2. The “Power User” Community: We’ve all seen those Reddit threads titled “Best flags to speed up Chrome.” Soon, instead of following a 10-step list, users can simply share a config file.

When can we expect it?

Once it hits the Stable channel, the days of tedious manual syncing will finally be over. Keep an eye on this space; we’ll let you know the second it’s live.
