If you see a purple download icon next to a website on Chrome for Android, you might wonder what it means. This symbol is part of Chrome’s offline features and does not indicate a virus or unsafe download.

What the Icon Means
The purple down-arrow icon shows that Chrome has saved a version of the page for offline use. Chrome does this for websites you visit often. The goal is to help you access those pages even when your internet connection is weak or unavailable.
This offline version is stored in the browser’s cache. It does not appear in your Downloads folder or file manager.
Why It Happens
Chrome automatically saves pages you frequently visit. You didn’t request the download—it happens in the background as part of Chrome’s offline content feature.
How to Access the Saved Page
If you tap the site icon with the purple arrow, Chrome opens the offline version of that page when you’re not connected to the internet.
To view or verify offline content:
- Open Chrome.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right.
- Tap Downloads.
- Switch to the Pages tab if available. This tab shows offline web pages saved by Chrome.

How to Remove the Offline Content
If you don’t want Chrome to keep this offline content, here are three ways to remove it:
A. Manually Delete the Page
- Open Chrome and go to Downloads > Pages.
- Find the saved page.
- Tap the trash icon to delete it.
B. Clear Chrome’s Site Storage
- Go to your phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps > Chrome > Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache. You can also choose Clear storage if you want to reset the app completely, but this logs you out of websites.
C. Limit Chrome’s Offline Saving
There’s no official setting to disable this feature, but you can reduce it through Chrome flags:
- Open Chrome and type
chrome://flagsin the address bar. - Search for Offline Pages or Prefetch.
- Set these flags to Disabled.
- Restart Chrome.
Should You Be Concerned?
No. The purple icon does not mean anything harmful was downloaded. It’s a performance feature that helps when your internet connection is unstable.
However, if you visit shady or pirated websites, use caution. While Chrome’s offline cache is safe, the sites themselves may not be.
To avoid saving content from those sites, browse in Incognito Mode. This mode does not save browsing history or offline content.
