7. Import and Export Chrome Bookmarks

  4. Select an HTML file exported from another browser

To export bookmarks:

  1. Open chrome://bookmarks

  4. Save the HTML file as backup or to move to another device

8. Sync Chrome Bookmarks Across Devices

Chrome bookmarks sync automatically if you’re signed into Chrome with sync turned on.

To enable sync:

  1. Click your profile picture in Chrome
  2. Click Turn on sync if it’s off
  3. Sign in with your Google account

This syncs bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, and more.

If Chrome bookmarks aren’t syncing, try:

  • Signing out and back in
  • Checking sync settings under chrome://settings/syncSetup
  • Ensuring sync is allowed under your Google account
  • Restarting Chrome

9. Backup Chrome Bookmarks

To back up manually:

  1. Export bookmarks as an HTML file (see section 7)
  2. Save the file to a secure location or cloud storage

You can also find the raw bookmark data file:

  • Windows:
    C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks
  • Mac:
    /Users/<YourName>/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Bookmarks

This file is updated automatically but isn’t human-readable.

10. Recover Deleted or Lost Chrome Bookmarks

If bookmarks disappeared or were deleted accidentally:

a. Restore from exported file

If you previously exported them, re-import using chrome://bookmarks.

b. Restore from system backup

You can restore the Bookmarks file from a system restore point or Time Machine (Mac).

c. Check synced devices

If sync was on, check if another device still has the bookmarks. Then export and import them.

d. Use data recovery tools

In rare cases, third-party recovery tools may help retrieve the bookmarks file if recently deleted.

11. Chrome Bookmarks on Mobile Devices

Chrome Android Bookmarks

  • Tap the three-dot menu
  • Tap Bookmarks
  • You’ll see Mobile bookmarks, Bookmarks bar, and synced folders

To add a bookmark:

  1. Tap the star icon in the address bar
  2. Choose a folder if needed

Chrome iPhone Bookmarks

  • Tap the three-dot menu
  • Tap Bookmarks
  • View and manage bookmarks across folders

On both platforms, syncing must be enabled in Chrome settings to see desktop bookmarks.

12. Advanced Features and Tips

Keyword Bookmarking in Chrome

You can assign custom keywords to bookmarks:

  1. Go to chrome://bookmarks
  2. Edit a bookmark
  3. In the Name field, use a short keyword (e.g., “gh” for GitHub)
  4. Type the keyword in the address bar to access the site

Note: Chrome doesn’t officially support keyword shortcuts like Firefox, but you can use extensions or search engines for this.

Managed Bookmarks (for Work or School)

In enterprise or school environments, Managed Bookmarks are controlled by administrators. These bookmarks appear in a special folder and can’t be edited by users.

To view them:

  • Open chrome://bookmarks
  • Look for a folder named Managed Bookmarks

Best Chrome Bookmark Extensions

Enhance bookmarks with these extensions:

  • Raindrop.io – Visual and tag-based bookmark manager
  • Bookmark Sidebar – Adds a collapsible sidebar
  • SuperSorter – Automatically organizes and deduplicates bookmarks
  • Bookmarks Clean Up – Helps find dead or duplicate links

Search for these on the Chrome Web Store.

13. Chrome Bookmarks Troubleshooting

Common issues:

  • Bookmarks not syncing: Re-check account sync settings, update Chrome, restart the browser
  • Bookmarks bar missing: Press Ctrl + Shift + B or go to Settings > Appearance
  • Accidental deletion: Restore from backup or another synced device
  • Bookmarks not saving: Try in Incognito mode or disable extensions that may interfere

Clearing the browser cache or resetting Chrome may also help with persistent issues.

Google Chrome bookmarks are a powerful feature for anyone who wants faster, more organized web access. Whether you use a single device or sync across platforms, mastering bookmarks will improve your productivity and browsing experience.
