What to Do to Stop Fake McAfee Redirects in Chrome

These pages aren’t from McAfee. They’re fake warnings pushed by shady advertisers, extensions, or hidden scripts on certain websites. If you’re redirected without clicking anything, it usually means something inside your browser is misbehaving.

How to Stop the Redirects in Chrome

  1. Check and Remove Suspicious Extensions
    a. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter
    b. Disable all extensions
    c. Restart Chrome and test if the redirects stop
    d. Re-enable one extension at a time to find the problem
    e. Remove anything you didn’t install or no longer use
  2. Clear Notification Permissions
    a. Go to chrome://settings/content/notifications
    b. Under the Allow list, remove any site you don’t recognize
    c. Turn off notification prompts completely if you don’t want any
  3. Clear Browsing Data
    a. Open chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
    b. Choose “All time” as the time range
    c. Clear cookies, cached files, and site settings
  4. Reset Chrome to Default Settings
    a. Visit chrome://settings/reset
    b. Click “Restore settings to their original defaults”
    c. Confirm the reset when prompted
  5. Run Chrome’s Built-in Malware Scanner
    a. Go to chrome://settings/cleanup
    b. Click the “Find” button to start the scan
  6. Use a Good Antivirus Scanner
    If Chrome’s cleanup doesn’t find anything, scan your computer with trusted antivirus software like Malwarebytes or Microsoft Defender.
