Google Chrome keeps running in the background even after you close it. This helps extensions and notifications stay active but can slow down your computer. Here’s how to stop it.
Turn Off Background Apps in Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.

- Select Settings.

- Scroll down and click System in the left menu.

- Find “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.”

- Toggle it off.
- Click the X to close Chrome.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager.
- Find any Google Chrome processes.
- Right-click and select End Task if any are still running.
Stop Chrome from Running at Startup
- Open Task Manager (
Ctrl + Shift + Esc). - Click the Startup tab.
- Find Google Chrome in the list.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
Now, Chrome will only run when you open it.
