Stop Google Chrome from Running in the Background on Windows

Google Chrome keeps running in the background even after you close it. This helps extensions and notifications stay active but can slow down your computer. Here’s how to stop it.

Turn Off Background Apps in Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu () in the top-right corner.Three Dots Settings Menu on Edge
  3. Select Settings.

  5. Find “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.”Chrome Settings System
  6. Toggle it off.
  7. Click the X to close Chrome.
  8. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.Chrome Task Manager New 2025 Design
  9. Find any Google Chrome processes.
  10. Right-click and select End Task if any are still running.

Stop Chrome from Running at Startup

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. Click the Startup tab.
  3. Find Google Chrome in the list.
  4. Right-click it and select Disable.

Now, Chrome will only run when you open it.
