Google Wants to Use AI to Help You Reset Your Passwords

Updated On:

Google has been slowly adding AI features to Chrome. The latest addition to this list is the experimental password change service.

Improved password change service: Experimental feature, which offers automatic password change to the user when they sign in with a credential known to be leaked. – Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS

I am yet to see this working “automatically”, but here is what we know so far.

Some Background

Before I tell you about the new automatic password change feature, I should tell you about Password Checkup.

Google’s Password Manager on Chrome has a “Password Checkup” feature. It goes through your saved passwords and identifies passwords that are part of known data leaks. The idea is you’ll reset the password when you are aware of this.

It is not easy to keep passwords up to date. Especially if you have been reusing passwords across multiple services.

Enter AI.

According to Google “When Chrome finds one of your passwords in a data breach, it can offer to change your password for you when you sign in”.

“When one of your passwords is found in a data breach, Google Password Manager asks if you want it changed to a strong password”

This, for now, is an experimental feature. If you are using the Canary version of Chrome, you can enable the flag and open chrome://settings/ai on a new tab to play with this feature.

If it works, I’ll be really happy. I have plenty of password warnings from Google that I am too lazy to take care of. It is possible that you also have a bunch of them.

Hence I am rooting for Google and the Chrome team to figure this one out. Apart from text generation, this could be one of my favorite AI features if it works.
