How to Set Incognito Default on Google Chrome

In this article, I will show you a workaround to always open Google Chrome in incognito mode.

Incognito mode helps browse the internet privately. You can open an Incognito window from the Chrome menu or with the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + N.

What if you want a way to always open incognito mode, making it your default browsing mode?

Here is how to create a desktop shortcut on your computer to always open Chrome in private mode.

  1. Right-click the Chrome icon on your desktop and choose Properties.Chrome Properties
  2. Find the Target field.

  3. In the Target field, after chrome.exe” add -incognito as shown in the following screenshot.

  4. Click Apply, and then OK.
    Apply and OK
  5. Open Google Chrome using the updated shortcut. You should now see Chrome opening in Incognito mode by default.

I hope you found this tutorial useful. Do you want to see additional steps or details for this process? Let me know in the comments section.

I LOVE this, very useful, but my problem is when I do open my new incognito window the window links to the old Chrome icon and not the new Incognito icon. Is there any way to change that so the window is tied to my new icon?

Thanks for this. I wanted the incognito mode to always open results in a new tab. I’ll check after a reboot, but it works right now.
