A newly added Chrome OS flag enables dark mode on WebUI, which includes Settings, History, and Downloads, etc.
WebUI dark mode
Google is sowly making progress with Dark Mode or Dark Theme for Chromebooks. Last week we saw an early version of the theme switcher toggle.
This week, Google has added a new flag to Chrome OS:
WebUI dark mode: Allows dark mode usage in WebUI. Note that this does not necessary enable dark mode, which is enabled via the #enable-force-dark flag.
What is WebUI?
“WebUI” is a term used to loosely describe parts of Chrome’s UI implemented with web technologies (i.e. HTML, CSS, JavaScript).”
Examples:
- Settings
- History
- Downloads
As you can see in the video above, the theme switcher does not do anything to these pages at the moment. However, this new flag brings dark mode support to Settings, History, and Downloads as well.
It is safe to assume that we will see dark mode applied to other WebUI based system apps which are work-in-progress.
