Google Chrome To Have Speech Recognition

by Dinu on 13/08/2010

Android recently beefed up it’s voice based actions capability. You can say “Go To ChromeStory.com” and the phone will open the browser and show the website for you.

Have a look at how it works. What if you have the same feature on Chrome Browser as well ?

Well, looks like Developers are working on an HTML Speech Input Element proposal. This is a proposal for adding speech recognition support to HTML 5. It includes translation also, along with the speech recognition. So you speak, chrome understands what it is, and can even translate it.

Since its an HTML 5 feature, it may not be limited to Chrome, at least in the long run.

Use Cases From The Proposal

  • Web search by voice:
Speak a search query, and get search results
  • Speech translation:
The app works as an interpreter between two users that speak different languages.
  • Speech-enabled webmail client, e.g. for in-car use.
Reads out e-mails and listens for commands, e.g. “archive”, “star”, “reply, ok, let’s meet at 2 pm”, “forward to bob”.
  • Speech shell:
Allows multiple comments, most of which take arguments, some of which are free-form. E.g. “call <number>”, “call <contact>”, “calculate <arithmetic expression>”, “search for <query>”.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation:
Speaks driving instructions, and accepts spoken commands, e.g. “navigate to <address>”, “navigate to <contact name>”, “navigate to <business name>”, “reroute”, “suspend navigation”.
  • Dialog systems, e.g. flight booking, pizza ordering.
  • Multimodal interaction:
Say “I want to go here”, and click on a map.
  • VoiceXML interpreter:
Fetches a VoiceXML app using XMLHttpRequest, and interprets it using JavaScript and DOM.

This is awesome, I have just gotten my first taste of this (and you can too) by installing YouTube remote on your Android and go to YouTube.com then login, then visit http://www.youtube.com/leanback in your browser, now you can search for videos with your voice. This is the first taste, after that you want to do more and end up Googling to see if Chrome supports voice input yet!

This is exciting news, thanks for the link to the proposal!
