This is a guest GREAT post by Geek107 He explains how to enable Google’s new SSL search as default in Google Chrome’s Addressbar /Omnibar without an extension.

If you like having a super-secure browser (read as chrome ;) ) I’m sure you’ll want to have this feature in chrome: Google’s SSL Search as your default search engine from Omnibar. Here is an easy way to do it.
Right Click on the omnibar and select the ‘Edit Search Engines’ option.
chrome google ssl search
You will now see the Seach Engine Window. Click the ‘Add’ button:
chrome google ssl search
Now write what you want for the first two inputs. The url is ‘https://www.google.com/search?hl=all&sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s
chrome google ssl search
Now Click add and test out your new secure search engine! Enjoy ! hmm and, don’t forget the comment box !

Please note, that when you do so, you lose some options (namely: Suggest and NavSuggest) of the Omnibox. It would be so nice, if there weren’t that limitation in Chrome… :(
