“Jolicloud” a Cloud Based OS is now built on Chrome OS

by Dinu on 28/03/2010

Jolicloud is one of the early adopters of Cloud Based operating system concept. With support for  600+ web apps, and faster growing html 5 support, the company behind Jolicloud announced recently that they are moving from  Mozilla prism to Chrome.

A company which saw the future of Cloud Based operating systems earlier than many, someone who have been working on Cloud Based Operating systems for a while now, and now built on Chrome itself, will this  be a tough competitor for Chrome OS ?

Features of JoliCloud

Jolicloud Express : provides  a quick and easy way of installation on a windows based netbook.

The Launcher : Works similar to Chrome Os Application menu. You can navigate easily between apps using the Alt-Tab shortcut.

The App Directory : Install best programs for your netbook in just one click. The list is curated by a team and also includes suggestions and discoveries from the community of users

The Social Stream : I would say, something like built in friendfeed ? This feature lets you “visualize in a snap the beat pulse of all your friends and web applications“.

The Update Manager : Cloud based operating systems tend to concentrate  a  lot on easy update managers.  JoliCloud also has an update manager to offer, which is easy to use.

About three months ago I tried Jolicloud on my netbook, but because it still was in its infancy (beta) I ran into a few compatibility, slow down as well as corrupting my registry. Think I’ll wait till Chrome OS comes shipped with the Acer netbooks to try again.

I’ve read somewhere that Jolicloud is now available on Chrome Wep Store. So that means, you can install Jolicloud on any Chrome browser. For instance I have a Chrome OS running, and I have Jolicloud installed. Would I be able to install applications such as VLC on my local hard drive. Because from what I read, you can run local applications on Jolicloud even though you are not connected to the internet. Please share you thoughts. Thanks

That’s the Jolicloud page with shortcuts. Not Joli OS.
