The latest version of Google Chrome dev version has added Early version of Geolocation API. Now, Google Chrome can identify your location and use it for different services. Google’s Geolocation API allows developers to pinpoint your computer’s location by looking at the WiFi networks around you.
Just like google tested extensions and themes, to enable these built-in geolocation features, you have to run the browser with “–enable-geolocation.”
Since Google Chrome browser is the most important part of Chrome OS which google is planning to launch later this year, adding Geo Location API to chrome makes sense. The future Chrome OS devices will be location aware. We can also assume that there will be a wifi only version of Chrome OS tablet, or netbook, just like the iPad, to cut the cost of 3G SIM card.
If you are an extension developer, check out this release post for more details on this new API.
